oh albany

Remember the shooting in front of the Vietnamese restaurant we like in Albany? It's happened again - or at least I think it has. Dan and I headed to Van's for a quick dinner last Friday in the early evening, before meeting Hamish and Ellen for a movie, and as we drove up, we saw an African American teenager sprawled face-down, unmoving, on the sidewalk in front of Van's surrounded by police and an ambulance. This really terrified me. There's been nothing in the news about this incident, so it's hard to know what really happened, but suffice to say, I think it will be a while before I get up the courage to go there for dinner again. (Dan on the other hand still wanted to eat there on Friday night! He figured the worst was over... but I overruled.)

And then, yesterday, a UAlbany student was shot in the head and killed a few blocks from Albany Medical, right by where Dan parks his car to go to the hospital (less than a mile from our house), in a "safe" residential neighborhood just like ours.

All communities have violent crimes now and again, but this feels a little close to home right now.
