hiking (wading) in the catskills

Catching up on a fun weekend we had a week or so ago ... on Friday evening, we went to the lovely wedding of our friends Kristina and Dan in Saratoga, where we also got to visit with my uncle Tim, aunt Sarah, and cousin Eliza, and even ran unexpectedly into a couple of med school friends! On Sunday, we had a full day of picnicking, starting with a casual breakfast picnic in our local Washington Park with Hamish, Ellen, and Rowan, and then we were off to Tanglewood in the Berkshires for an outdoor concert by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. A bit too much sun, but a really nice afternoon.

But on Saturday, Cate and I took to the Catskills for a "hike." Less than a tenth of a mile in, it was clear that all the rain we've had this summer had turned the flat part of our trail into a lake. We didn't want to turn back already, so we took off our boots and socks and waded through, while frogs swam by. Apart from the leech I had to pull off my leg afterward (eww!!), this was a fun little adventure. The rest of the trail was better, although pretty unmaintained and like bushwacking for a good part of it. We shared the summit with a couple of dudes taking a break from a local bluegrass festival, and then headed home.

Cate before we forded the trail river, and me wiping leeches off my feet!
