cascade and porter

Dan, Cate, and I hiked Porter and Cascade Mountains in the Adirondacks today, and added two more high peaks to our lists (that makes 17 for Cate, and, uh, 4 for Dan and me).

It was a beautiful day, but the bugs were brutal. By the time we got off the summit of Cascade, Catie was bleeding from numerous bites from black flies and no-see-ums all over her forehead and neck.

Can you see them swarming her??? (In retrospect, I'm think that pausing for this picture probably gave the bugs the advantage they needed to take a good chomp and cause poor Catie to start bleeding...)

Needless to say, we booked it down the mountain, Cate with handkerchief in hand, wiping the blood before we passed families on the trail so as not to scare the children. (Oddly enough, I don't have a single bite on me... I guess I don't smell good to bugs!)

Despite a shortened stay on the summits, though, it was really a great hike, and I'd definitely go up Cascade again when the bugs clear out!
