Spring Break 2007!

We had a nice time in Maine this weekend. On Sunday, the whole family went for a winter/spring hike up Bald Rock. This is a favorite trail - Dad and I went camping there once when I was a kid and slept in the little rickity lean-to on top, and I'm pretty sure Dan and I camped up there once too! (or at least I have pictures that seem to suggest we did... remains a mystery!)

Wooooooo! Spring Break 07!

This is Dad using Mariah's account to comment. Yes, we did camp on top of Bald Rock, but we didn't stay in the old lean-to. We slept out on some grass patches and you and your friend Hannah buried yourselves in your sleeping bags. It was spring and the mosquitos were vicious. I remember giving up trying to sleep with the sound of bugs in my ears and getting up and sitting on the rocks to watch the sunrise out over Penboscot Bay. Another time Mariah and I camped up there. This time we had a tent (with Oakley as a puppy inside with us). We woke to steady rain. When it became clear that the rain was not going to stop, we just climbed out, broke camp and sloshed out to the car. This brings to mind the first time Jesi went on an overnight with a backpack. Our goal was to hike to the top of Blueberry Mountain (near Evans Notch in western Maine) along with Jesi's friend Lucy Amory and her Dad, Tom. The girls each had a pack, but I don't think much more was in them other than their sleeping bags. About two thirds of the way up the mountain Jesi started crying, convinced that she couldn't make it. We had to put her out in the lead with a watch telling her that she only had to go 10 mintues and then we would stop again to rest. But she did make it, much to her delight. The next morning we awoke to a wondrous site. Ground fog had set in as far as we could see below us, giving the illusion that we were on an island with other mountain tops appearing as other islands with a white ocean between us. Do you remember any of this Jesi?

Ha! I definately remember the camping trip with the Amorys, Dad, but I don't remember crying because I was too much of a weakling to carry a sleeping bag up a hill... guess I blocked that one out =) Thanks for sharing the memories!
