driving home

I read this really interesting article today about a "hypermiler" - this guy who excels at getting absurdly high gas mileage from his car (link). In a Toyota Prius, he's gotten well over 100 MPG (or twice the EPA-assigned MPG), and in his regular Toyota Accord, he gets almost 60 MPG! The guy's not actually really an environmentalist - he started doing this post-9/11 to reduce U.S. dependency on foreign oil. Anyway, I decided to try some of his techniques on my boring commute home. So, how did I manage to save 0.00000001 gallons of gas, you might wonder? Well....

1. I took my foot off the gas everytime I saw a red light up ahead. This basically meant that I drove home at approximately 15 miles an hour, since there is a red light about every 100 yards on my commute. Also, other drivers loved me.

2. When I did get stuck at a red light, when it turned green, I accelerated painfully slowly. Like practically idling slowly. Again, other drivers loved me.

3. I didn't turn on the heat (OK, I turned it on after 10 mins... it's like 10 below in Albany!!).

4. When I stopped to go to the grocery store, I didn't accelerate or brake until I got in the parking stop. This was my most skilled achievement, since it meant I had to make 3 turns coasting without braking...

5. Rather than braking, I ran a few red lights.... but that's just par for the course in Albany!

And that boys and girls, is how to save one ha'penny next time you're at the gas station.

i don't think it's as much that it uses gas to break, but that you've already used the gas to get up speed, and then you waste that momentum by braking... i think =)
