colden mountain
So, remember about a month ago when I wrote about our hike up Phelps Mountain with Cate and Kendra? Here’s the very belated second installment of that hiking story… Dan and I had planned this hike as our training trip for Cape Chignecto in Nova Scotia, and we chanced on a beautiful weekend in the Adirondacks. After doing Phelps on Saturday, we said goodbye to Cate and Kendra and kept hiking to the head of Avalanche Pass, where we camped for the night.

On Sunday, we got an early start through the pass, past Lake Colden, and up Colden Mountain. Avalanche Pass was incredibly beautiful, winding along the lake over “hitch matildas”—bridges nailed directly into the cliff side—but also incredibly buggy, so we literally ran this part of the trail, stopping only for a few pictures.

Colden was a steep climb, but worth it – the views were stunning. The weather was starting to turn a bit overcast, so we didn’t stay long at the top. On the way down, we passed the turn-off for Mount Marcy—the highest peak in the Adirondacks—and Lake Arnold, where we had originally planned to camp.

Here’s me finally signing us out back down at the parking lot. Think I look a bit weary? That’s because I was.
