For his sixtieth birthday, Dad asked us all to come spend a weekend at one of his favorite places, Baxter State Park. And we all said yes, of course. It was a wonderful weekend despite some rain, and we hiked and canoed and read and played cards and cooked meals on Coleman stoves on the porches of our little rustic cabins. We played a Peter-themed game of birthday charades and ate pie and snuggled with the kids and had a little baby celebration for Carter and Emily. Bennett discovered hot chocolate and marshmallows, sandboxes, and hiking. He learned about loons, which he said "scared him a yittle bit" but then he "found" one that wasn't that scary that hung out in front of Pam's cabin (it was a log in the water...). Tyler became a real uncle and used his bare hands to wrangle boogers out of Bennett's nose.
Camping with little kids is definitely not easy, but with a ratio of 10 adults to 2 kids, it was pretty doable. And I figure it can only get easier from here forward, so we officially want to go back next year!
