another vineyard weekend!

We spent a wonderful long weekend at the Vineyard with Hamish, Ellen, and baby Rowan, and Cate and Kendra (who left their husbands at home with their noses in their law books). Dan and I headed over late Thursday night so we could put the trash (left over from New Years) out, and had a semi-lazy Friday morning (I waffled between dealing with some leftover issues at work and settling in with a new book and a mug of coffee). Hamish, Ellen, and Rowan joined us on Friday afternoon, and Ellen and I went for a peaceful late afternoon walk on Lucy Vincent beach.

Friday night, Kendra and Cate joined us in time for dinner and a lively game of Catchphrase - both the original (Ellen found herself at a self-proclaimed West Coast disadvantage by not knowing what a frankfurter or haddock was, and by making up lyrics to a Muse song... "Super SONIC Black Hole") and then our own Britney Spears version. That went something like: “If Britney Spears were Hispanic and died in a plane crash at the end of a movie...” (Answer: La Bamba) Or “if Britney Spears were an 80s TV star with a glass eye…” Dan actually correctly guessed Kendra’s obscure clue with a Family Guy reference: Sandy Duncan. (What? Who?) When the Britney novelty wore off, we moved on to Pictionary, and eventually woke little Rowan up with all our yelling…

On Saturday morning, we made blueberry pancakes and bacon and then made the mistake of plugging in Guitar Hero, which Kendra had brought. I never understood the appeal of this video game until I actually strapped on the guitar and gave it a go. It is so fun and so ADDICTIVE. Cate, Kendra, Ellen, and I finally tore ourselves away and went walking along the Aquinnah cliffs (Gay Head), which rise over a hundred feet above the beach in places and are made of many different colors of clays, sand, and soil.

After the beach walk, we drove back through Edgartown and Oak Bluffs for some sightseeing, and then arrived back at the house to play some more Guitar Hero and Oh Hell (which Cate and Ellen both knew as Up and Down the River, and Kendra won).

That night we made pizza and spent the evening sitting around the fire, talking and telling stories. I have to say that my favorite was Kendra’s, who told us that in 5th grade, right after moving to Georgia and hating it, she decided to rebel and wore a neon orange t-shirt that said “I’m surrounded by idiots” to school on picture day. Somewhere, out there, there exists a class picture with a 10-year-old Kendra in the middle, scowling and professing that she is surrounded by idiots. This picture must be FOUND. (I can’t even type this without laughing out loud…)

Sunday morning we all headed down to the Black Dog for breakfast and then Cate and Kendra left on the 1:15 PM ferry. Rowan napped in my arms while Ellen and Hamish packed up and then they headed off on the 2:30 PM ferry. After everyone had gone, Dan and I headed out for a late afternoon walk along Long Point (Trustees). It was freezing cold but a beautiful day, so we walked for an hour or so before starting to get chilled, and then headed home to light a fire, make up some corn chowder, and read and relax for the night.

We left at 6:30 AM – got everything in the car and were ready to drive off when we realized we couldn’t find the house keys. A frantic search ensued until I realized that what had most likely happened is that we had accidentally thrown them out (they were in a dirty little plastic bag that had been hidden in the garden) in our cleaning efforts. Dan quickly found them in the trash, and off we went!
